Shiprock in New Mexico Towering alone in the desert of the Navajo Reservation, Shiprock is a 1,583ft tall sand-colored volcanic plume and has deep significance in Navajo religion and myth. According to a legend, this gigantic formation of volcanic and igneous rock was originally a piece of land that became a bird. The bird took flight, carrying the ancestral Navajo people on its back before landing at sundown and turning back to stone. The people the bird carried continued living on its peak after it turned back to stone. They were “coming down only to plant their fields and collect water”. However, one day a lightning strike left them stranded. As a result, in accordance with Navajo custom, people are now forbidden to climb it, so no one disturbs those spirits. A Tribute To Vicuna In the heights of the Andes, the vicuna tells a quiet story of patience, respect, and devotion passed through generations. On the brink of extinction with barely five thousand vicuñas left in the Peruvian Andes, the governments of Peru launched a conservation plan to protect their habitat. During the Inca Empire, the vicuña was considered a sacred animal. Its extremely fine wool was reserved exclusively for royalty. To obtain it without harming the animal, "Chaku" was practiced, an ancient technique that involved capturing, shearing, and releasing vicuñas into their natural habitat. This tradition, performed every three years, reflected the Incas' commitment to the conservation of this species.
