The House passed a critical amendment Wednesday requiring federal investigators to determine whether the U.S. military weaponized ticks with Lyme disease during the Cold War. Rep. Chris Smith’s (R-NJ) amendment—Section 1068 of the FY26 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 3838)—directs the Government Accountability Office to investigate whether the Department of Defense used ticks as hosts or delivery mechanisms for biological warfare agents between January 1, 1945 and December 31, 1972.
