✞✞✞Saint Victor of Shaou (Shaw)✞✞✞=>This Saint is one of the great martyrs. And Shaou is the place where he was martyred. The Saint is also known as Victor ll. He lived, persisting in goodness, in the upright way that he inherited from his Christian parents.
✞Though he was a youth, a leader of a region, rich and handsome, all of them were not able to separate him from the love of Christ. (Rom. 8:35) And when the Era of Persecution came, shunning his honor, he received affliction for the sake of Christ and on this day was martyred with his followers. And the Lord has given him a covenant.
✞✞✞May the God of the Saints not conceal from us the mystery of sanctity of His beloved. And may He multiply their blessings for us.

✞✞✞ Salutations to God ✞✞✞
(Translated by Mhr. Esuendale Shemeles with the permission of Dn. Yordanos Abebe)
Nonetheless, because the choice was by the Holy Spirit, they insisted and she was appointed as a shepherd upon all those monks.✞Of course, she was a woman and a youthful one at that but because she truly loved Christ, she administered the monks in complete diligence. And because the grace of God was abundant in her, she used to console the anxious and used to heal with her prayers by laying her hands upon the sick. And by this, the monks were gladdened.
✞She in turn used to pass through many trials. Because her name was famed beyond the desert and entered the cities, the sick used to come to her and were made whole. Nevertheless, one day an unexpected trial came her way.
✞One Satan possessed woman, after she healed her, because her appearance was very beautiful asked her for adultery (the woman asked the woman) as she thought that she was a man. However, St Eugenia rebuked her and sent her on her way. And that wicked young lady, who was upset, went to the city and accused her to the governor Philip (who was the Saint’s father).
✞Her father (Philip) since the day the Saint had went missing had an idol built in her name and used to prostrate before it. And because that youth had accused her falsely saying, “The monks in the monastery, particularly the one they call Eugenius, their leader, when he tried to rape me I escaped” Philip ordered that the monastery be raided and the monks lashed.
✞During the lashings many monks died. And St. Eugenia who was enraged by the torments that the monks were enduring took her father to a private place and revealed who she was. And when he found his daughter that he missed, in jubilation he ordered that they leave the monks alone.
✞And seating with his daughter in private, she told him all the things that had happened and explained to him about the heavenly life. She then broke the idol that was created in her name and then had her father baptized. He also became an ascetic and lived for many years. Then, he was appointed a bishop.
✞And on this day, he was beheaded for the sake of Christ. But St. Eugenia went from Egypt to Rome and established a convent for virgins. And under her, God gathered 3,300 virgins. And after she lived consoling, counseling and leading them for years, the ruler of the region asked her to renounce her faith.
✞And because she said, “No” like her father, she was beheaded and became a martyr. The 2 eunuchs that had become ascetics with her also became bishops and did serve the Church.
✞✞✞Honor is due to our mother St. Eugenia who is a virgin, an ascetic, a healer, a consoler, an abbot, an abbess, a righteous and a martyr.
✞✞✞ Abba Gebre Nazrawi✞✞✞
=>This Saint was an Ethiopian that lived in the 14th century. He is well known in Tigray (where his monastery is) and around Shewa. The father who tonsured him a monk, Abba Gorgorios (Gregory), was the disciple of the Great Abba Anorios (Honorius) of Debre Tsegaga.
✞Abba Gebre Nazrawi after he struggled in different monasteries, by the council of the elders he establish his own monastery. He then gathered many disciples and the monastery became great. At the time, it had become a monastery with strict rules next only to the Monastery of Wali (Waldiba).
✞And the reason for it was because Abba Gebre Nazrawi was a completely austere father and did not allow any monk to eat except one meal a day. And next to Abune Ewostatewos the Saint takes a huge place in honoring and having the Sabbath honored.
✞Chiefly, he has fought for Saturday to be revered. And because he was a good abbot, he has bore many righteous fathers for our country. And he used to be jubilant in the Psalms of David for 24 hours without consuming a cooked meal.
✞And he used to prostrate until his sweat dripped. And to fulfill the apostolic deed, while he preached the Gospel, he used to give as alms what he had. Today is the day the Saint departed.

✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
✞✞✞Saint Eugenia✞✞✞
=>The invocation of this Holy Youth’s name is revered. When her account is heard, it grants a fragrant soul. Hence, let me start [her chronicle] with the aid of God. And you, follow me with the help of God.
✞St. Eugenia was a fruit of 3rd century Christianity. She was Roman in lineage and her father was called Philip. He was a commander and a governor. And her mother who is not mentioned by name (though some say Klothia) was a Christian.
✞And as the time was hostile to Christians; she hid her Christianity and lived like a heathen. However, when she gave birth to St. Eugenia, she was vexed as the lot of her daughter and herself was going to be death if she had her baptized.
✞And that was because Philip was an idol worshipper that utterly hated Christianity. And beyond that, he used to force people to kneel and bow down to idols. Thus, the mother raised her child with a whole Christian teaching and manner but without having her baptized.
✞Thereafter, St. Eugenia became a youth that was infused with fasting, prayer, humility and patience. Nevertheless, she used to daily beseech her Creator so that she could receive the mystery of baptism.
✞And while they were in this situation, one fortunate event took place. Because her father, Philip, was appointed as a duke for Alexandria in the Land of Egypt, they took all their possessions and left. Though this was a good fortune for St. Eugenia, it brought her another trial.
✞She heard that her father was going to wed her to a heathen official. At that time, because it was necessary to resolve, she made a decision. She then went to her father and asked, “Father! Do this one thing for me. Thereafter, I will obey whatever you will say. However, give me permission so that I could go to the wilderness to see the sights and come back before my wedding day.”
✞And her father, who did not suspect anything, sent her with 2 eunuchs (named as Protus and Hyacinth). And when they reached the desert, St. Eugenia told her attendants, the 2 eunuchs, the truth.
✞She said, “I am going to the desert to become a Christian and then to become an ascetic. Hence, if you do not want that, return.” Yet, both of them said, “Our life and death is with you” and entered together into a monastery.
✞And when they reached there, she told their secret to a righteous monk (Theodore while some say Helenus, bishop of Heliopolis) and asked him to baptize her. Then, after the monk baptized all 3, St. Eugenia said, “Make me a nun” and he replied, “My child! This is a monastery for men.”
✞But she reiterated, “Father! That is no problem! I will conceal myself.” Then, he taught her the rites of a monastery and tonsured her a monk, naming her “Abba Eugenius” and added her to the brethren. Feminine names like Eugenia, Theodora, Anastasia . . . and the like can easily be changed to masculine ones like Eugenius, Theodore, Anastasias.
✞And from that day onwards St. Eugenia began her strife as Abba Eugenius. During the day, she used to do the hard work, which the monks did, and in the night, she used to pray diligently. And for one year she served the monastery in complete attentiveness.
✞And she endured the trials that came to her all through that time as Christ, for Whose sake she shunned the world and left her father’s palace for, was her power/strength. And at that moment, since the Abbot had passed away, the monks fasted and prayed for some time to choose the next Abbot who could lead the monks and give confessions.
✞After they completed their fast and gathered, the message they received form the Holy Spirit was astounding. All their eyes laid on Abba Eugenius. However, she knowing her secret (her womanhood), was shocked.

Of course, they knew well that the stones they censed were not gods.✞But because they did not want the lie, which they have used to become honored, elevated and rich, to be revealed, rather than receiving the truth, they used to choose to persecute the Apostles. Hence, when they heard that the people of Lydda had converted, in anger, they gathered soldiers, held shields and spears, and went forth to eliminate the Apostles.
✞And when St. Andrew knew this, he selected St. Philemon from his disciples who was “sweet-worded/eloquent” (whom we commemorated on Hedar 27- December 6) and instructed him to read from the Psalms of David, Psalm 114 (115):12, saying “Read it aloud” after handing him the an opened psalter.
✞Then, St. Philemon started to recite filled with the Holy Spirit.
He said,
“Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not . . .”
✞And lastly he added, “They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them” and became quiet. Afterwards, the girdle of the hearts of the priests of idols and their soldiers that heard this loosened. And in minutes, they became captives of the Holy Spirit and bowed down before St. Andrew.
✞He then baptized them and added them to the congregation of believers. And on another day, the following happened in one of the districts of Lydda. While they played, the child of a Christian lashed the son of a heathen that fell down and died.
✞After which, the father said to the killer’s father, John (who was a priest), “I will kill your son in his place.” However, John the Priest replied, “Be patient with me until I speak of the matter with my teacher/master” and went. He then told the Apostle.
✞But at that time, because the Apostle was ministering the Gospel, he sent St. Philemon. And when Philemon reached the area, because a quarrel had started, the governor of the locality rose and was thrashing the populous, hence he rebuked him. And for the reason that the Apostle said, “You were appointed to administer the people and keep them, but not to afflict them”, the official had the Saint hanged.
✞And as St. Philemon was hanged because they were beating him, he wept, as he was a youth. And at that instant, when the people wept for him as well, a raven, a small bird and a dove came up to him and comforted him. And choosing amongst them the dove, he sent it to St. Andrew.
✞And the ruler who heard the dove speak in the tongue of men was astounded and had the Saint taken down. Nevertheless, Satan in anger dwelling in the wife of the governor had his child killed. And while they mourned, St. Andrew reached.
✞He then exorcised the demon that dwelt in the ruler’s wife, bound him to the deep and raised the dead. Then, Philemon raised the child that had died first. And with these miracles the official, the people and the soldiers all believed in Christ and were baptized.
✞Then, in the final years of his life, St. Andrew left Lydda (Lod) and preached in many nations. Nevertheless, in a place, which’s name is not mentioned, when they tried to burn him alive, fire descended from heaven and consumed them all.
✞Again, others caught, imprisoned, beat and tortured him. Then in the middle of the night, the Lord came and consoled him. And on Tahisas 4 (December 13), on this day, they stoned and crucified him.
✞Hence, like our fathers we say to the Saint,
“I, in Hallelujah, sing and chant to you
Wake me from my indolence the Apostle Andrew
As Lod (Lydda) was awakened through your hand”
(Arke of Tahisas 4)
✞✞✞May the God of St. Andrew awaken us from the death of the heart and help us reach to His glory. And may He grant us from the Saint’s blessing.

✞✞✞On this day we commemorate the Departure of Saint Andrew the Apostle✞✞✞
✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
✞✞✞St. Andrew the Apostle✞✞✞
✞✞✞The Holy Apostle was born and grew up around Bethsaida and was the younger brother of the Arch-apostle St. Peter. And his father was Jona. The Saint learned fishing from his older brother beginning from his childhood. And when he was older, after learning the Old Testament, he became the disciple of St. John the Baptist.
✞Serving the Baptist, he learned under him for 6 months. And at the time, he was a close friend to St. John the Evangelist (son of Zebedee). And he was one of those that saw the great mystery of the Trinity when our Lord Jesus Christ was baptized.
✞After the Lord returned from His fast (in the Desert of Judea), St. Andrew followed Him inspired by the Holy Spirit. There, hearing St. John the Baptist’s testimony, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29), St. Andrew followed the Lord.
✞And for this, he was called the first disciple of Christ. (John 1:47) And the scholar Mar Gelawdios in his praise to St. Mary (Hymns of the Icon) confirms it saying, “Mary you are the faith of the First Apostle Andrew.”
✞The Gospel tells us that the Holy Apostle was a haste servant (John 6:9/12:22). He preached in many parts of the world though his See was Lydda (Lod); after learning under the Lord for three years and three months, and receiving the Holy Spirit at the day of Pentecost.
✞[At one time] the Apostle spoke with the Lord in a ship (where the Lord had appeared as a captain) and saved St. Matthias from the hands of men who were cannibals (ate people).
✞[What took place was as follows.] Because all the seamen had said that they would not allow St. Andrew and his disciples, who went to a dock to sail, to board their boats for a journey that would take thirty days, our Lord Jesus Christ, to Whom belongs glory, came as a young captain and took the Apostle and his disciples [to their destination]. Thus, He enabled them to complete the voyage in hours, which would have taken them thirty days.
✞And St. Andrew thought that the captain was just a man and preached about the Lord to the Lord and wished Him well. However, when he knew that the captain was our Lord, he was shocked and wept.
✞As it says in the hymn,
“When he discerned You, and identified Your semblance;
He said ‘All that I told Thee in arrogance,
Redeem which I transgressed, and have forgiveness’”
✞And he then said, “Forgive me?” and the Lord replied, “Be strong! I am with you.”
✞The name Andrew means “valiant, strong”. And there are two types of valors, temporal valor and spiritual valor. Temporal valor (valor of the flesh) is being confident in oneself (one’s ability) and attacking others or responding to an attack.
✞However, spiritual valor (valor of the spirit) is being ruthless to oneself for the sake of Christ and for the sake of the upright faith to the degree of giving oneself and receiving torments without being frightened. And this is what the fathers call conviction.
✞St. Andrew for the time being was valiant amongst Israelites but later, for the fulfillment, he revealed the name of Christ to the extent of reaching death, hence it says [in literature] “Valiant”.
“You are not frightened by the angel of wickedness
You are the valiant Andreas (Andrew)”
(Doxology of Abiye Egzi)
✞St. Andrew’s bishopric was Lyyda (Lod). And St. Peter the Arch-apostle has taught in the city prior to St. Andrew. After St. Peter left for Rome, Saint Andrew and his disciples went there and labored much in it.
✞In ancient times, Lydda was not a small city as it is today. Although St. Andrew entered that place and converted many after preaching Christ, the idol priests came to be angry.
